20100701 YNP 1 - Otters

We were out early looking for wolves and bears, with some limited success. Then we drove to Mammoth Hot Springs. Joan and Catherine walked around on the Terraces but I was unimpressed and stayed in the car and checked my email. IN the afternoon we drove way north in Lamar Valley to Trout Lake, where we had been informed we would find a family of otters.

20100629 Drive to Billings

We broke camp at RMNP early Tuesday morning, got in the van, and headed north to Billings, Montana. Along the way we visited Little Big Horn, where Custer made his famous last stand.

Joan and I got up pretty early, left Catherine in the cabin, and headed up into the Lamar Valley to see what we could find. It was only 7:30am or so but we saw a bunch of cars parked, so we pulled over and parked and got out to investigate. Jackpot! A mother grizzly and her three cubs were feeding on an elk carcass in Alum Creek. Added bonus: a coyote!

20100705 YNP 5 - Reprise

Today we reprised our earlier successes, once again seeing otters, bison, and—most spectacularly—several grizzlies and a wolf, this time closer than we'd seen them before. This time we had Anne and Mary with us.

20100704 YNP 4 - Old Faithful

Being more of an esthete than a scientist, I wasn't overly impressed by Yellowstone's geothermal features, but we had to see Old Faithful once, and this was the day. I liked the geyser, loved the hotel, especially on the inside—although it proved awfully difficult to photograph.

20100708 - Mt Rushmore and Custer State Park

Our last day of vacation. We drove the wildlife loop at Custer State Park (beautiful, beautiful park), then drove up to Mount Rushmore to visit the presidents' heads, then we headed south.

Not a lot of photos today. We packed up the van and drove all day from Yellowstone, clear through the state of Wyoming, and into South Dakota, where we arrived just barely in time to get a quick dinner before the restaurant closed at 9pm.

20100706 YNP 6 - Mammoth Hot Springs

We returned to Mammoth Hot Springs, in part hoping to see bighorn sheep in the preserve up in that part of the park. No sheep, but we did discover that you can actually drive up above the Terraces and that in fact that's where you get the better view of things. So we drove a little and walked around a little. Driving through Hayden Valley we encountered an amazing traffic jam caused by bison crossing the road—cost us over an hour.

20100703 YNP 3 - Tetons

Saturday, July 3. We rose very early and drove down through Grand Tetons National Park to Jackson Hole, to pick Anne and Mary up at the airport. Saw some of the Tetons along the way.

20100630 Drive to Yellowstone

After checking out of our hotel in Billings, we drove into downtown to find the cathedral, where Grandmother was married back in the early 1940s. Then on to Yellowstone via the Beartooth Scenic Highway, and scenic it was indeed. Had the best pizza I've eaten in a long time at the Red Lodge Pizza establishment in Red Lodge, and saw our only moose in Cooke City shortly before we entered the park (but I got no photos). After checking into our cabin at Roosevelt, we did a quick recon trip into Lamar Valley.

Photos from the one day (Monday, June 28) that we spent in Rocky Mountain National Park. We didn't have time to do a lot, especially as our drive up the Alpine Highway got us caught in a terrific traffic jam (construction) on the way down. After a bad first night in the sleeping bag, at Joan's suggestion, I purchased some grizzly-bear pattern pajama bottoms and after that I slept reasonably well in the bag. No photos of me in the grizzly-bear pajamas!
